I like people I really do. And, many folx I know have a hard time with me traveling alone. Safety is often their top concern. I’ve got that (mostly) covered. Beside packing heat I have safety features on my person at all time and I have safety devices for my hotel/VRBO/hostel. More on that boring stuff later. Just know I am not doing any of these trips without thinking of safety.
Now, why do I travel alone? For a few reasons.
- I like to do weird things first and foremost. I like to dangle off a cliff. I like to hike 7+ miles up a mountain. I like to wear helmets on my vacations. I like to move. Drinking a cocktail on the beach has its time and place but I wouldn’t be able to sit still for too long. You beach goers would get annoyed with me fast.
- I have flexibility and the ability to work remote. My trips usually have some time carved out for work. If I traveled with a partner I would have to be much more conscious about the time spent on the computer but alone? I can hop on when I have good wifi.
- Brian isn’t able to keep up with me any longer. This will be covered in length at some point but the short version is this – after his motorcycle accident our ability to travel in the same way was obliterated. Flying is challenging. Snow trips are out due to instability. Hiking trips are a no-go due to my wanting to tackle a 2000′ push. Europe is just not handicap accessible. This is not a pity me/us statement, it is just fact. Our life changed on a dime and we have to adapt. The one way we do this is to ‘allow’ each other to take trip that makes sense to us as singular humans walking this planet. We get the looks. We get the questions. I do the weird thing, even when people don’t understand.
My plan for this blog to slowly get down on paper what it is like to be a solo, 53 yr old, married, female traveler. I will keep traveling alone when I want and I’ll bring along people as I wish.
